  14. REGISTERING DEICON AND THE 7.0 PLUS UTILITIES
  15. ============================================
  16. DeIcon is not free. Sites using this software in business MUST
  17. register it. Contact the author for site licensing information. If it is for
  18. personal use only, please send a few dollars. Or you can consider the
  19. following.

  21. 7.0 PLUS Utilities is a package of all (more than 25) System 7.0 utilities
  22. I have written. You can get the disk with all of them NOW (not wait until
  23. I decide to upload the next program) by sending $29.95 to me. This will
  24. register you for all the software, will get you a disk of the software, and
  25. an update to the PLUS Utilities when it rolls around. It’s a pretty good
  26. deal. You should register your software, anyway, so why not do it
  27. like this? And it’s a lot cheaper this way.

  33. USING DEICON
  34. =============
  35. •  If you use DeIcon, please please please send me a note. My addresses
  36.     (post and e-mail) are given below in “About the Author”. Also, read the
  37.     information in the above section on registration.

  39. What Does DeIcon Do?
  40. --------------------
  41. •  DeIcon, a drag-and-drop utility (Drop Box), hides the icons of selected
  42.     files, folders or disks in the Finder, so that only the name is visible. That way,
  43.     you can stack your files, drag-and-drop utilities, etc. without taking up a lot
  44.     of room. It is especially useful for making a launchpad that consumes very
  45.     little space on your desktop. It even works with aliases (with a bit of help).
  46.  
  47. •  Read further if you plan to use DeIcon with aliases.
  48.  
  49. Using DeIcon
  50. ------------
  51. •  Drag sets of files, folders, or disks into the application, “Drop Box-
  52.     style”. DeIcon will scan folders and disks provided, and will
  53.     modify (if preferences allow, of course), all files, directories, and disks,
  54.     no matter what their depth. Drop Boxes require Apple Events, and thus
  55.     System 7.0 or higher.
  56.  
  57. •  To get your icon back, just Get Info on a “DeIcon’ed” file and click
  58.     on the spot where the icon should be. A black square will indicate that
  59.     you have selected it. Press backspace, and your old icon should reappear.
  60.     Or you can use another Drop Rob-Box, Custom Killer. And you can use it
  61.     on multiple items, just like this utility.
  62.  
  63. •  NOTE: DeIcon modifies the custom icons of files. If you drop
  64.     in a file with a custom icon, the custom icon will be DELETED.
  65.  
  66. •  You will notice that icons are often not updated unless you have selected
  67.     the Relaunch Finder preference. This is because of the way the Finder handles
  68.     certain bits when updating its windows. The sure method of updating your
  69.     icons is by selecting the Relaunch Finder preference. This simply quits and
  70.     relaunches your Finder remotely.
  71.  
  72. •  Double-click on DeIcon to modify the preferences and see the about
  73.     box information.
  74.  
  75. •  Alerts are very annoying, especially in Drop Boxes. So there aren’t any. As
  76.     a rule of thumb: if it doesn't work, there must have been an error.
  77.  
  78. •  To cancel processing, just type a command-period. Files already processed
  79.     will remain modified.
  80.  
  81. DeIcon and Aliases
  82. -----------------
  83. •  Since the Finder resolves all aliases when you drop them into a Drop Box,
  84.     DeIcon can only think that you dropped the target (not the alias)
  85.     in to be modified. The way to overcome this problem is to put the aliases
  86.     you wish to modify into their own directory and drag that folder into the
  87.     Drop Box. If you don't want the folder to be modified, hold down the option
  88.     key so you can modify the appropriate preferences. The rule with Drop Boxes
  89.     is that if you drop in an alias, the target is modified. If an alias is inside
  90.     a directory that is dropped in, the alias is modified.
  91.  
  92. Preferences
  93. -----------
  94. •  The first time you try to modify a file using the program, the preferences
  95.     dialog will come up, just to make sure the correct parameters have been
  96.     set up. You can modify these if you wish. If you don't want to see that
  97.     window again, just say OK. You will have to explicitly ask for for the
  98.     Preferences window the next time you wish to change anything.
  99.  
  100. •  The preferences are fairly self-explanatory. You can choose to show an
  101.     alert before modifying anything.The Relaunch Finder button lets you select
  102.     whether the Finder should be quit and relaunched remotely to update icons
  103.     which may not otherwise be fixed. By choosing to modify directories, you
  104.     have decided that folders themselves can be modified. You can modify files
  105.     and folders inside those folders which you have dropped in by checking the
  106.     Modify contents box. For example, if you drop in a folder containing three files
  107.     and another folder, and have Modify contents on but Modify directories off, the
  108.     folders’ icons will remain visible, but the icons of all contained files
  109.     (including those inside the second folder) will be hidden.

  111. •  To show the Preferences dialog on-the-fly in Drop Box mode, hold down the
  112.     option key while the program is launching.
  113.  
  114. USING DROP BOXES
  115. =================
  116. Drop Boxes are applications (drag-and-drop utilities) which can take advantage
  117. of System 7.0’s Apple Events. To use them, just drag a file over the application
  118. icon just as you would drag a file over a folder to move it into that directory.
  119. The Drop Box is then opened and processing is done. The program then quits.
  120. You can also throw in whole directories and disks. You don’t have to throw in
  121. just one, either. Select a whole bunch of files, directories, or disks, or any
  122. combination of the three, and dump them in. The Drop Box will scan for
  123. files of the required type and modify them accordingly. All files in all
  124. directories within those dropped in will be modified. Any aliases dropped
  125. directly into a Drop Box (not inside a directory) are resolved by the Finder
  126. and thus their target (parent) is modified.
